What is a SIG?
A Special Interest Group is a member-led community built around a shared area of language testing and assessment. It is where members meet, exchange ideas, collaborate on projects, and contribute to GALTA’s wider work, run by members, for members, with light and supportive oversight from the board so every group stays aligned with our mission while shaping its own path.

How to start, step by step
1
Define your focus
The topic, why it matters, who it serves, and your goals for year one.
2
Gather founding members
At least five GALTA members, plus a Convener and, ideally, a Co-convener.
3
Prepare your proposal
Name, aims, rationale, leadership, founding members, and planned activities.
5
Review
The board reviews for fit and feasibility, usually within three to four weeks.
6
Launch
We assign your liaison, set up your space, and announce your SIG to members.
Who does what
Convener
Leads the group, organizes activities, and keeps things productive and aligned.
Co-convener
Shares the workload and provides continuity. Recommended.
Members
Take part, contribute ideas, and help shape the group’s direction.
Board Liaison
Your bridge to GALTA: support, approvals for outward-facing activity, and a line to the board.
Supported, not smothered
You lead your group your way. A few simple guidelines keep every SIG credible and on-brand:
- Speak for yourselves, not for GALTA, without board approval through your liaison.
- No independent fees, fundraising, or contracts; all financial and event matters go through GALTA.
- Use the GALTA name, logo, and channels only with approval.
- Keep every space respectful and inclusive, and respect copyright and member privacy.
